Collection: Carnivorous Plants 101

Carnivorous (insectivorous) plants have adapted to grow in nutrient deficient and moist growing medium. They lure and capture the insects with mutated leaves.

To grow these plants successfully you will want to determine where you would like to grow them; indoors, outdoors, temperatures during winter outdoors, ambient humidity and amount of light available.

Planting media:

Peat moss with either horticultural sand, perlite or pumice is the economical media we use successfully.
Natural Lighting:

This varies from species to species, where you live and weather you are growing indoors or outside. Venus flytraps, sarracenia pitcher plants and most sundews prefer bright sunlight. When temperatures exceed 90 degrees regularly it's best to give them a bit more shade.
Artificial lighting:

1500ft candles of full spectrum light works well for most of these plants with a 13hr photo period.
Sarracenia and Darlingtonia are more difficult to use artificial lighting past their juvenile stage due to their height.
Nepenthes and Darlingtonia prefer half shade.
Humidity:

30% and higher, Nepenthes require 50% and higher to regularly produce pitchers.
Water:

Non chlorinated, 100ppm and lower. Rain water or distilled is best.
Feeding:

Unnecessary. The main source of food is light the insects are like a multivitamin for us. You can however feed Nepenthes, sundews, and pitcher plants a fish food or fertilize with half strength max sea monthly. Flytraps you can use the same strength fertilizer or feed them live moving insects no larger than the trap size.
